Why would I be doing such a thing?? Trust me, I’ve asked myself the same thing multiple times over the past 2 weeks of October. Even though I am a Naturopath, I’m still human. I love a good glass of red or a cool beer during summer as much as the next person. I try not to drink too much and am certainly not throwing back a 6 pack of ‘coldies’ every day, however I found I was beginning to look forward to that smooth red a little too much.
Also, ever since I turned the ripe old age of 18, there has never really been a time that I haven’t drunk alcohol. Australia has a serious drinking culture and I honestly wanted to see if I could step away from that and complete the task.
It has been easier than I thought it would be, however when I am in a situation where I would normally drink (going out to dinner, visiting my family etc) I have definitely struggled. It is such a psychological thing I’ve found. What I’ve been drinking instead of alcohol is flavoured kombutcha, or sparkling mineral water with a drop of orange, lemon or tangerine essential oil as flavouring.
On the flip side, going without alcohol is great for your liver, skin and mental health. So I’m taking advantage of these things this month! I’m supplementing with a good quality liver tonic that is going to help my detoxification pathways and the overall health of my liver. I’ve also upped my water intake and have been adding in a few drops of lemon essential oil for added cleansing benefits.
